Massey’s disappearance culminated in a body discovered in the Lower Harbor after a protracted, multi-agency search; the last sighting was captured on video at about 3:25 a.m. on a Sunday as investigators coordinated across MPD, county sheriff, MSP, DNR, Coast Guard, and other agencies.

The community and university supported the effort with hundreds of volunteers, NMU information sessions offering mental health resources, and public gratitude voiced by the MPD Chief for volunteers and residents.

A two-month, large-scale search using land, air, ice, and water resources, supported by hundreds of volunteers and multiple agencies, preceded the recovery.

Police stated the disappearance remains under investigation as autopsy procedures and further inquiry into the circumstances of Massey’s death continue.

GoFundMe campaigns were launched to support Massey’s family, while local TV6 maintained coverage and organized community information sessions.

Prior to the discovery, mass vigils and memorials were held in Marquette, including gatherings on March 2 and March 30 to honor Massey.

Public guidance urged avoidance of private property and ice, with volunteers advised to monitor red zones and contact MPD at 906-228-0400 with information.

Hybrid Robotics located Massey’s body using underwater ROVs, and Marquette County Sheriff’s Office divers recovered him and transported the body to UPHS-Marquette for autopsy.

The body was found around 3:30 p.m. on a Friday by Hybrid Robotics and recovered by divers; autopsy will determine cause of death.

The investigation began after Massey’s cell phone was turned in to police on a multi-use path, with family notified and Massey reported missing.

Authorities briefly suspended the initial search, then resumed focus on the lower harbor water near Founders Landing with daily social media updates.

The case drew involvement from multiple agencies, with vigils held in Corunna and Cologne in addition to Marquette, highlighting the breadth of the response.
