India Becomes ChatGPT’s Biggest Market as Users Double and AI Use Surges
November 2, 2026
India is now ChatGPT’s largest market by weekly active users, with its user base doubling since January 2026, according to OpenAI India MD Prabhjeet Singh.
That growth reflects a broader shift toward practical use: people in India are applying ChatGPT to work, study, coding, content creation and everyday problem-solving, rather than treating it as a novelty.
To reach more users beyond English-first urban audiences, OpenAI is improving support for Hindi and other Indian languages and emphasizing voice features, especially for people who prefer speaking to typing.
A new voice update, GPT-Live-1.1, is designed to improve pronunciation, multilingual and mixed-language speech, and conversational flow; it adds 13 voices across seven languages, including the Hindi voices Neer and Leher.
OpenAI is also working to make ChatGPT’s full model experience run on entry-level smartphones with limited memory, while its Android-first approach reflects how important phones are as an internet gateway in India.
Affordability is another part of the access strategy: ChatGPT Go launched in India in August 2025 at ₹399 a month, and its under-$5 plan was later offered free for a year to Indian users who signed up starting November 4, 2025.
Use is spreading beyond individual consumers: enterprises, global capability centres and startups are moving AI projects from pilots into production, with JioHotstar and Cars24 cited as examples.
India is also one of Codex’s largest and fastest-growing markets, with developers using it in tier-II cities; OpenAI says coding-token usage has grown about 17-fold since February and coding tools are being used in areas including finance and legal work.
OpenAI is pitching ChatGPT to small businesses as well, with examples including traders creating festive messages and single-person shops exploring help with marketing and inventory management.
To support local demand and enterprise data-residency needs, OpenAI has partnered with TCS’s HyperVault data-centre business, starting with 100 megawatts of capacity and with potential to scale to 1 gigawatt.
OpenAI models are also available through AWS’s Amazon Bedrock for inference in India, as businesses assess privacy, security and potential returns when adopting AI.
For advertising, OpenAI partnered with Razorpay to let Indian brands use the Engage platform to prepare product catalogues, manage campaigns and measure performance; early participants include Tanishq, Fastrack, Traya, Tata Neu, Shaadi.com, Axis Max Life and NMIMS.
