Amazon Plans 1,000 Same-Day Delivery Hubs, Repurposing Stores and Unusual Sites
  • Amazon is planning a major expansion of its sub-same-day delivery network: from fewer than 100 stations today to more than 1,000 by 2031, with roughly 80% of Prime members expected to live within 10 miles of one. The company forecasts the stations will handle about 28% of company-fulfilled volume by 2029 and half of transactions by 2035.

  • The buildout is expected to prioritize technology and proximity to customers, with many—possibly most—new stations using repurposed properties instead of purpose-built warehouses.

  • Large new industrial buildings, around 300,000 square feet, remain a common format; in Jacksonville, Amazon upgraded a 272,000-square-foot building with $16.6 million in improvements and later spent another $12 million to add refrigerated space for groceries and perishables.

  • But Amazon is also exploring smaller and unconventional sites, where being close to customers can matter more than a building’s size. Its planned Orbital modular warehouse technology is designed to handle about 75,000 same-day units in 100,000 square feet and can be arranged in different types of spaces.

  • Examples include a 15,000-square-foot former Bartell Drugs site in Seattle used for Amazon Flex and a proposed 5,700-square-foot site in North White Plains, New York, for Amazon Now grocery and household deliveries within 30 minutes.

  • Vacant Amazon Fresh stores could also be converted into delivery stations: after Amazon closed its Fresh grocery division in January 2026, it remained responsible for long-term leases on many locations, whose grocery-ready layouts and customer-facing sites could make conversion practical.

  • Amazon is testing another approach inside existing Whole Foods stores: a 10,000-square-foot automated center in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, holds 12,000 items not displayed on shelves, which shoppers can order in-store and often collect within 10 minutes.

  • A planned 230,000-square-foot big-box store in the Chicago area could combine conventional retail with a sub-same-day delivery station, reflecting a broader trend that includes retailers such as Costco incorporating or expanding delivery operations in store developments.

  • Walmart is pursuing neighborhood-scale delivery hubs as well, often in former drugstores; its closed-to-the-public Depots typically span 15,000 to 20,000 square feet and let drivers pick up high-demand goods for nearby deliveries, often within 30 minutes.
