Micron’s India operations span design centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad, assembly in Gujarat, and global shipping, with plans to assemble and test tens of millions of chips this year and hundreds of billions next year.

Next year, Micron will substantially scale up its assembly and testing facility in India, signaling strong execution of the country’s semiconductor policy and ISM 2.0 framework.

The company intends to multiply output at the India assembly and testing site, reflecting a significant expansion in capacity.

CEO Sanjay Mehrotra credits India’s semiconductor policy and the India Semiconductor Mission for turning vision into execution and expanding the ecosystem.

Micron has been operating in India for seven years, directly employing over 7,000 people and supporting tens of thousands more across the value chain.

Mehrotra notes that Micron has moved from vision to execution in India, highlighting a seven-year presence, more than 7,000 direct employees, and substantial downstream job support.

Growth is driven by rising AI-focused demand for memory chips, with AI described as a defining technology that relies on fast, dense, and power-efficient memory.

Micron points to AI-driven demand as a key growth driver, citing about 1,400 percent growth in AI-related business and the pivotal role of memory in AI models and data handling.

Mehrotra stresses that AI growth translates into greater demand for faster, denser, and more power-efficient memory, which Micron aims to meet through its India operations.

Micron’s engineering presence in India, centered in Hyderabad and Bangalore, contributes to a portfolio of over 3,700 patents, inventions, and disclosures.

Current capacity is said to exceed India’s entire laptop memory demand, underscoring Micron’s large-scale footprint and highlighting ISM and ISM 2.0 as foundational programs.

In Sanand, Gujarat, Micron began commercial production earlier this year at India’s first semiconductor assembly and test facility, marking the Made in India label for finished DRAM and NAND products.
