OpenAI Expands Codex to Master Microsoft Office with Enhanced Document Control
June 28, 2026
OpenAI is steering Codex toward a broader workbench model, moving beyond code-only help to structured interfaces that operate software, setting up competition with Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic-driven Office integrations through native actions and Office add-ins.
To achieve this, OpenAI is testing a targeted computer-use interface for Codex by integrating with Microsoft Office add-in layers, focusing on PowerPoint and Excel instead of generic screen-based control.
This feature would let Codex interact with document internals—such as pivot tables and master slides—with higher reliability, reducing reliance on screenshot-and-keystroke methods.
Two opt-in toggles in Codex’s Computer Use settings would allow Codex to manipulate Office documents via each app’s add-in framework, including task-pane and content add-ins for more precise edits of slides and spreadsheets.
These Office-focused capabilities are currently unreleased and appear as opt-in options within the desktop Codex app on macOS and Windows, alongside the existing Computer Use plugin.
The development signals Codex’s aim to handle multi-step Office tasks more efficiently by using structured hooks rather than pixel-based control, setting it apart from rival approaches.
