A UK startup, Conflow Power Group Limited, proposes embedding micro data centers directly in urban lampposts to disperse compute and bring AI processing closer to users.

The micro data centers would use self-destructing or tamper-resistant hardware with firmware locking, encryption, and anti-tampering measures to disable compromised components or prevent unauthorized access.

Locally generated solar energy and battery backups would power the lamppost data centers, reducing reliance on centralized hyperscale data centers and addressing sustainability concerns.

The plan aims to lower latency and ease pressure on national telecoms infrastructure by distributing compute closer to end users, though several hurdles remain before it can be realized.

If scaled, tens of thousands of micro data centers could be deployed across cities to support localized AI workloads like traffic monitoring, CCTV, autonomous vehicle coordination, telecoms, and environmental sensing.

CPG would deploy $2,000 Nvidia AI accelerators instead of flagship GPUs, making edge deployments more affordable.
