Safety System Stops Potential Runway Overrun at Teterboro Airport
April 25, 2026
A safety feature at Teterboro Airport prevented an aircraft from overrunning the runway on April 6, thanks to an Engineered Materials Arresting System that absorbed the impact.
EMAS is installed at more than 70 U.S. airports, including Teterboro, Newark Liberty International, and Trenton-Mercer.
The system uses a bed of crushable concrete at the end of runways that compresses under an aircraft’s weight to slow and stop it, preventing serious overruns, undershoots, or veering off.
