Cognizant Forms 25,000-Strong OpenAI Group to Bring Enterprise AI Into Production
October 30, 2026
Cognizant has created an OpenAI Frontier Capability Group with more than 25,000 professionals, aiming to help enterprises put OpenAI tools such as Codex and ChatGPT to work in software engineering, application modernization and customer operations.
The effort makes Cognizant’s AI deployment strategy more concrete than training alone, as it seeks to use AI and outcome-based delivery to improve efficiency and earnings quality—and help clients move from experiments to production.
Cognizant plans to roll out OpenAI tools first across its own sales and customer-success operations, then apply lessons from that work to client deployments; the company says engineers will review consequential decisions and points to experience modernizing mainframe systems for more than 500 clients.
The announcement builds on Cognizant’s existing OpenAI relationship, including earlier 2026 work to scale Codex across enterprise engineering workflows and a cyber defense initiative spanning vulnerability discovery through validated fixes. Cognizant is an Advanced partner in the OpenAI Partner Network and received the Codex Industry Transformation Pioneer Award at OpenAI’s Partner Summit 2026.
Cognizant is also building across competing AI ecosystems: on October 19 it expanded its Google Cloud partnership with 18,000 staff assigned to the effort, 11 days before announcing the OpenAI group.
The move comes as OpenAI seeks to bring Codex to large companies, having recruited Cognizant and CGI in April, while also building its own deployment capabilities.
Still, the announcement establishes delivery capacity, not confirmed demand: Cognizant disclosed no revenue targets, client count or investment amount for the group.
The financial trade-off remains unclear. Concentrating OpenAI work and taking on fixed-price or outcome-based contracts could strengthen Cognizant’s pricing power, but could also pressure margins if the company assumes more delivery risk.
Cognizant did not disclose expected returns or gross-margin effects, leaving investors to watch for evidence in AI-related revenue, order conversion, revenue per employee and workforce changes.
The strategy could position Cognizant to capture enterprise AI deployment work, but dedicating large teams to specific vendor ecosystems also creates resource-allocation risk if clients change technology choices.
One investor narrative cited in the article puts fair value at $66.66, while noting that other business drivers also shape Cognizant’s investment outlook.
