Gurugram Boosts Traffic Surveillance with AI-Enabled Cameras and Facial Recognition Technology
July 6, 2025
Gurugram is expanding its traffic surveillance network with a significant upgrade that builds on the initial deployment of 1,200 cameras at 218 junctions, now extending coverage to key areas such as Sohna, Badshahpur, Pataudi, Farruknagar, the Dwarka Expressway, and toll points along the KMP Expressway.
In addition to traffic cameras, the project includes the installation of 48 facial recognition cameras at high-footfall areas such as government offices, metro stations, hospitals, and markets, to aid in offender identification, missing persons tracing, and overall security enhancement.
These facial recognition cameras are strategically placed at locations like the District Court, Mini Secretariat, metro stations, Civil Hospital, and Gurugram Bus Stand to support police efforts in maintaining law and order.
The new cameras will incorporate artificial intelligence and adaptive traffic management systems to identify violations in real-time, significantly improving traffic discipline and safety.
This new phase aims to enhance traffic monitoring capabilities by installing additional cameras in strategic locations, including Dhankot and the Central Peripheral Expressway, further strengthening the city's traffic management system.
To support this expanded network, nearly 300 km of underground optical fiber cables will be laid to connect the new camera sites to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), enabling real-time monitoring and automated e-challan generation.
The fiber optic infrastructure will link the cameras directly to the ICCC, which manages live feeds and automates the issuance of traffic violations, ensuring more efficient enforcement.
The project, approved by the Haryana Chief Minister on June 2, is scheduled for completion within 18 months and will feature smart traffic management technology capable of automatically detecting violations like running red lights, helmet violations, wrong-side driving, speeding, improper lane use, and triple riding.
This initiative is part of Phase 2 of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority's (GMDA) CCTV project, which involves installing 2,722 AI-enabled cameras at 258 locations across Gurugram and nearby areas, with the project launched in June 2025 and expected to be completed within 18 months.
The expanded surveillance network aims to bolster security, traffic monitoring, and law enforcement efforts across Gurugram, leveraging advanced AI technology for smarter urban management.
