Voting Machine Failures Disrupt Midterms; Polling Hours Extended in Several Areas
November 4, 2026
Technical problems disrupted voting at polling places across the United States during the 2026 midterm elections, and officials in some areas extended polling hours.
In Milwaukee, equipment and power issues affected several polling places, but voting continued and officials said ballots were secured and counted.
At Saveland Park Pavilion, a machine initially failed to read about 100 ballots; workers secured them in a locked box, then ran them through the machine once the problem was fixed.
The Milwaukee Election Commission said restarting machines resolved problems at several locations and that ballots missing Voter ID numbers reflected a clerical error involving eligible voters; officials audited and processed those ballots and said they could track them if needed.
A tabulator at Fire House #38 returned to service shortly before 11 a.m., and the commission said ballots cast during the interruption had been counted.
Two tabulators at Central Count also malfunctioned, but technicians fixed them by 4:22 p.m. as the commission investigated whether the failures were related.
Officials planned to transport ballots under police escort to the county Board of Elections for counting with attorneys and representatives of all parties present, saying the process would help head off conspiracy theories.
Power outages affected Hampton School and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, but both polling places stayed open and power was restored by 4:45 p.m.
In Westchester County, New York, ballot scanners could not read ballots printed on paper that was too thick, so officials planned to count them by hand later.
In Broward County, Florida, voting began 20 minutes late after a new safety feature malfunctioned.
A power outage temporarily closed a polling station at a school in Maricopa County, Arizona, while machine setup problems led several Pennsylvania counties to extend voting by half an hour.
North Carolina’s Board of Elections was considering extending voting by an hour in seven counties after reports of widespread technical issues.
