OpenAI Launches Persistent Storage in ChatGPT: A New Era of Personal AI Workspaces
May 15, 2026
OpenAI has introduced a persistent storage feature in ChatGPT, creating a new Library where uploaded files are saved for use in future chats.
This enables users to reference past documents—like tax forms, recipes, resumes, travel plans, and warranties—and helps manage digital clutter, signaling a memory-enabled, ongoing ChatGPT experience.
Free users get 500MB of persistent storage, with larger storage options available on other plans: 4GB for Go, 20GB for Plus and Business, and 100GB for Pro.
Users can manage their stored files from Settings > Storage in both the mobile app and web interface, allowing reuse of old documents, building on prior uploads, and maintaining a personal archive.
Files generated by ChatGPT, such as spreadsheets or presentations, will also be stored for future reference, effectively turning ChatGPT into a personal AI workspace.
