Michigan’s independent investigation into former head coach Sherrone Moore, led by Jenner & Block, cost more than $11.5 million, with two March invoices totaling over $2 million, including one for about $1.9 million.

Jenner & Block were hired in December 2025 to probe Moore’s inappropriate relationship with his former executive assistant and broader culture issues within the athletic department.

Earlier reports allege a home invasion and related charges tied to the incident, which were reduced or dropped as part of a deferred resolution, with Moore allegedly confronting the staffer at her home with weapons.

Moore’s relationship with the staffer, described as lasting four years and an “open secret” within the department, was acknowledged by the staffer in interviews and noted as leadership awareness.

Context of interim-to-full leadership includes President Domenico Grasso taking on the role full-time after Kent Syverud’s cancer-related departure, with decisions about Warde Manuel’s future pending.

The staffer testified that Moore exerted substantial control over her and alleged threats during the affair, including an abortion connected to a medical condition.

Moore received an 18-month probation on April 14, 2026 after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges related to a domestic incident involving the staffer.

Moore was fired on December 10, 2025, arrested days later, and later pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors, receiving a suspended sentence and probation with conditions (no intoxicants, no weapons, no contact with the victim).

Moore faced an 18-month probation sentence for trespassing after entering the staffer’s home following his firing.

The investigation began November 13, 2025, after Moore’s inappropriate relationship with Paige Shiver led to his firing, and the probe expanded to examine the firing process and broader culture within Michigan’s athletic department.

Jenner & Block expanded the inquiry to examine how such relationships persisted without proper oversight and to include Moore’s firing process and broader governance issues within the athletic department.

The investigation is described as mostly complete, with an update anticipated at the May 21, 2026 Board of Regents meeting in Dearborn.
